Finito
F inally, done, isn't it? Got so much to write about, curses to be flushed, the horrible ICC that's murdered my sweet little game. But then, why bother, when Sambit Bal and Sir Richard Hadlee took the words outa my mouth and pasted them all over the internet? more...

1996 re-run?
Confirmed, and as in 1996, it's the bananas against the blueberries again. And a moment of comparison, shall we?Bat. Sri Lanka have Jayasuriya, and he's now due for a biggie, as is Sangakkara. Their captain is in good nick. Oz, however, have Gilchrist, Hayden and Ponting, and I haven't gotten into Clarke, Symonds or Hussey yet. Or, the Watson. So, ... more...

Minnows that were
Methinks, it's time the Bangladesh team take a bow -- and we stop referring to these not-so-ripe bananas as mere minnows. A definition, for enlightenment's sake, goes thus:Any of many species of small fish. Minnows are an important food source for larger fish and other animals. They are often used as bait for fishing. No wonder, the skipper is not o... more...

A tale of two Fernandos
Enthusiastic. Quick. Raw. This, perhaps, best describes Dilhara Fernando - one of the early potential successors to Chaminda Vaas after Zoysa went missing. It's no secret that age was catching up with Vaas, a real servant of Sri Lankan cricket, consistently delivering performance after performance. That consistency and accuracy, however, certainly ... more...

Post mortem soap opera
The Bollywoodish drama continues. And the short bloke - with more runs than words - has spoken out. "Tell me, the world has gone on talking about all this (our defeat and exit) but has anybody spared a thought for us? Did they try to find out what we have been going through?" A valid point, nearly. The loss has split the nation into four kinds of f... more...

Kiwis that fly, and how
Always wondered - how is it that the Kiwis don't get credit for the 'innovation' they brought to the game? For one - Mark Greatbatch was probably the first specialist pinch-hitter, and that set the tone for a total culture change - aggression at the start. The idea - maximum damage done in the first 15 overs, given the field restrictions. And the re... more...

Another day, another farewell
He's contemporary India's best spinner, and arguably, one of India's best bowlers. After 17 years of selfless service, struggle, glory, triumph, and defeat, Anil Kumble finally decided to hang up his boots. Indian cricket, weighed down by his mere presence in the bowling line-up, would disappointedly bid adieu to it's dear soldier. Of course, the l... more...

Close, but no cigar
The Proteas must be grinning in glory with sighs of relief, while looking down at their Lankan counterparts, near-insulting them in Apocalypto style with one word: almost. And this, coming from a side that has made the 'chokers' tag its own. Dare to disagree, huh? Must I really recall the 1999 semi-final? Klusener, for crying out loud, didn't back ... more...

the Rescue from Carribbean waters
The vessel may have sunk, leaving a few futures on the verge of being drowned, namely, those of the 'big' trio (Dravid/Tendulkar/Ganguly) and the coach himself. But the rescue ships are starting to float in. Vishy, a figure I naturally come to respect, is the skipper of this ferry, reiterating King Viv's mental strength remark. A bit surprising, th... more...

an eye for an eye
They say, attitude maketh the man. Atleast, these days, they do.In this report by Ashish Shukla, Big Viv' speaks of attitude. Mental toughness, aggression, and stuff of the sort. The heading (surprisingly) goes "Tendulkar's failure affects Sir Viv Richards", but it really is more about attitude than the little (debatable?) master. To quote an excer... more...

Success in Life
The founder of a highly successful company was asked what it took to achieve success in life. He replied: “The same thing it tool to get started; a sense of urgency about getting things done.”     Success in life should be determined by contributions, not accumulations.  more...

Au revoir!
And the Chappell era of indian cricket comes to a close.Of all the coaches that indian cricket had till now, none captured headlines like Chappell. Probably because none before him had taken on the established inertia of the system and tried to bring changes. I admire the courage of Chappell. It was so much easier to let things be where the big st...  more...

Thoughts on India-Bangladesh
So, India now have their backs to the wall. They came out flat, ran into a tenacious bunch of Bangladeshis and got embarassed. What went wrong? Did anything go right? What can be done to fix the problems. Below are my thoughts.....The only thing that went right was that we won the toss. Thats about it.Now lets talk about what specific things went w...  more...

Revisiting: Sachin Tendulkar is V/C?
I had posted this before the announcement of the team to the world cup - Sachin Tendulkar is Vice-Captain?I was questioning the sinister move by Vengsarkar to name Tendulkar as the V/C and I wondered whether it was to place a check on Dravid as the captain. I now feel that it was probably also to assuage the captaincy ambitions of our one-time capt...  more...

Level Playing Field
The T20 Championship has opened the eyes of many. In its own way it has also shown up the limitations of the 50 overs format. The shorter format means that the sides are more evenly matched than in the 50 overs format. And in the event of a one-sided contest, the whole thing gets over in 3 hours – it doesn't drag on for a whole day.Test cricket is...  more...
